Zalmen's bar mitzvah logo was lovingly made by our talented friend, Shimon Blacker. The Hebrew letter Shin at the bottom is the first letter of Zalmen's Hebrew name, Shlomo, and the Zayin in the middle of the Shin-- as well as the Z within the Zayin-- stands for his middle name, Zerach, as well as for Zalmen (his first name in English and Yiddish). Zerach means light, from the Hebrew root "to shine," symbolized by the sun beams. Shlomo shares a Hebrew root with "shalom," peace. The "Love Dove" in the logo is a symbol of peace based on a painting by Zalmen's namesake, his great-grandfather Sol (Shlayme Zalmen) Richmond. Included on the sun rays are the words for God's 13 attributes of mercy from Exodus 34:6-7, which Zalmen will read from the Torah. The love dove and sun rays also appear on Zalmen's wimpel, a Torah binder, made by his "Kleyn Bubbe" Miriam Shazeer.
